About us

With more than 25 years of expertise, we prioritise local materials, energy efficiency, and community development.

Led by Andrew McAvoy, we integrate architecture and landscape to help build a sustainable, better future.

Our philosophy

"If our landscapes require to be rewilded, then perhaps architecture needs to be also."

– Andrew McAvoy, principal architect, Retool Architecture

We begin from a nature-focused and environmentally conscious perspective. We strive to harmonize architecture and landscape. And, we emphasise waste minimization, energy efficiency, and reducing carbon footprints in all our projects.

Sustainable practices

Whenever possible, we prioritise using local materials. For example, timber, stone, and aggregates. We then supplement these with modern materials and technologies when needed.

In general, we take inspiration from Will Allsop’s ethos of “knock nothing down,” aiming to work with and preserve site features and recycle everything within the sites area.

Design approach

To fully engage with the sensory aspect of a build, our process begins with a hand survey and handmade drawings. As the design evolves, we transition to digital formats.

As needed, we collaborate with specialists tailored to each project’s unique requirements. In the past, this has included land use consultants, engineers, artists, renewable energy consultants, archaeologists, and ecologists.

Expertise and experience

We have over 25 years of experience in architecture. Working on large and small residential projects, new and old, we have plenty of know-how to bring to your project.

When it comes to sustainable architecture, we have worked on ff-grid strategies, including early work with the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. This is further supported by training in earth-sheltered design undertook in Iceland.

Community engagement

Our practice encompasses community development, delivering research and infrastructure projects and sourcing funding for these initiatives. In addition, we have participated in community energy projects. These have included solar and other renewables.
